Forbes.com ranks Omaha as the BEST City to move to in 2024. I’d like to have some of what they were smoking.
Omaha is the home of Warren Buffet, home to 4 Fortune 500 companies, home to the NCAA Baseball Tournament and home to one of the Best Zoos in the entire world.
It is considered one of wealthiest cities in America.
If Omaha is such a great place to live, then why are the college graduates LEAVING?
I can attest to the truth of this as I live in Nebraska.
TAXES are way out of control. Property Taxes outrageous.
Agland is taxed at a lower rate than property taxes.
NE is ranked in the top 10 of worst property taxes.
There is state income tax and a state sales tax.
Many local cities have a city sales tax on top of the state sales tax.
In Omaha there was a “Temporary” 2.5% restaurant tax.
Nothing is more “Permanent” than a “Temporary” tax.
When you dine out in
Omaha expect to pay – state sales tax, city sales tax and that
“temporary
2.5% restaurant tax for a total of 9.5% and then
don’t forget that tip.
The weather does suck at times.
We get hail, flash flooding and tornadoes. Last year my town got baseball size hail and every home in the town was damage and every single car that was outside lost multiple windows.
Insurance is way out of control. Nebraskans can expect their home insurance to double by 2026. If buying a home make sure you know how old the roof is and if there has been any claims or weather damage on the home.
A $300,000 home is expected to be taxed $5,000 in 2025 – that is crazy, out of f*cking control and needs to be capped or it will completely destroy the market in the coming years. I
Taxes are so mismanaged in this state. If they were properly managed taxes could be 1/10th of what they are. Spending is OUT of control and unnecessary.
Our public school system is OK. Not great, but they are ok compared with other states. You would think with the taxes we pay that our schools would be #1 in the entire United States.
That’s not the case and overall scores are decreasing.
Crime – there is a 1 in 178 chance of being victim of violent crime.
Property Crime – in Omaha it is 1 in 29 of being a victim.
Limited Public Transportation – is lacking, there is a bus system and in the process of building a street car system to be done in 2027.
Opportunity – graduates are seeing more opportunities outside the state in larger cities.
Change – change is slow in Nebraska. That part is FINE with me for the most part.
Omaha is a segregated city – meaning neighborhoods are designated Red, Yellow, Blue or Green.
Red was considered high risk and Green was considered low risk. At one time, Mortgage Loans were evaluated on such factors as Race and/or immigration status – this is known a Red Lining.
In the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s Omaha began expanding Westward and many of the new neighborhoods built at the time had covenants that prohibited people of color from purchasing homes in these areas.
Because of this, Omaha became very Segregated.
In 1968, Congress passed the Fair Housing Act, which prohibited discrimination from the sale or renting of housing – however, Red Lining can still be seen today.
There also isn’t sh*t to do and the roads are bad.
